COSMELAN & DermaMELAN
ABOUT COSMELAN and dermamelan
Cosmelan and Dermamelan are depigmentation agents, that act by decreasing melanin in the skin.
Melanin is responsible for the darkening of the skin and contributing to such factors as melasma and other skin discolourations. Melanin is increased by sun exposure, acne, aging, and hormone fluctuation. Our Cosmelan Peel inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which is involved in the process of causing skin darkening.
Cosmelan leads to a decrease in melanin synthesis and therefore levels resulting in a decrease in darkened skin colour.
Generally, a Cosmelan Peel is a milder treatment than Dermamelan used for less severe pigmentation or for a general rejuvenating effect.
Dermamelan is used for more severe pigmentation.

+ Who is it suitable for?
Cosmelan & Dermamelan is suitable for most patients that are concerned with pigmentation including melasma (hormonal pigmentation), sun spots, freckles, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring & discolouration from acne. This topical treatment is suitable for all skin types and will overall improve skin tone and texture leaving the skin bright and smooth.
+ Who cannot have Cosmelan/Dermamelan?
- Pregnant and breast-feeding patients
- Active herpes simplex
- Current skin cancer in treatment area
- Any patient who has has used oral isotretinon (Roaccutane) within 6 months prior to treatment
- Any patient who has burned skin, blistered skin, irritated skin, or sensitive skin in any of the areas being treated
- Any allergies should be discussed to ensure the treatment is safe
+ What does it feel like?
The Cosmelan/Dermamelan mask feels like a heavy moisturiser. It is left on the skin for 8-12 hours. During this time most patients don't experience pain or discomfort although the skin may start to feel slightly tingly, itchy and warm towards the end of the day. We recommend to come into clinic in the morning for this procedure. It is important not to sleep with the mask on. Once the mask has been removed at home, the skin may start to feel warm, tight and slightly stingy. Redness and swelling may be present.
+ How many treatments are required?
The Cosmelan/Dermamelan procedure is a single in-clinic treatment, however some skin conditions may require treatment annually or every few years.
+ How long do results last for?
Most patients experience a significant improvement after just one treatment. Long-term benefits are dependent on meticulous home care for six months following treatment, as well as ongoing sun avoidance, daily use of SPF, reapplication of SPF and avoidance of other triggers. It is important to understand that every skin responds differently to treating pigmentation.
+ Are results immediate?
Most patients will start to see results within 2 weeks post treatment and significant improvement within 4 weeks. Continuing the at-home product application for the continuing 6 months will achieve optimal results and prevent the reappearance of pigmentation.
+ Is there any downtime?
Downtime is 10-12 days although redness and dryness may last longer depending on each individual skin. Within 24 hours post treatment the skin will be red, warm and slightly swollen. Generally within 48-72 hours you can expect the skin will begin to feel itchy & dry and visible peeling will start. Strict adherence to the home maintenance program at this time is essential. All the necessary aftercare will be explained by our dermal therapist and follow up appointment can be booked to ensure skin is responding well.
It is important not to pick, rub or exfoliate the skin. Allow skin to shed naturally. If you pick the skin, you will increase the risk of infection and scarring. Cosmelan/Dermamelan has minimal risks and is a controlled treatment. The level of downtime from this treatment can be intense for some however this is expected and in no way is a complication of treatment.
